New England Adventure 2022 - Day 8

Another rainy day. Sort of. It is more like living in a cloud with 100% humidity. I set out on my morning walk twice and returned due to rain then the third time was the charm. Yesterday I walked south and found every store we will ever need. Today I walked north and came upon a slice of early American history that personifies the motto “never give up! never, never give up!”

Nearby our condo is a granite monument dedicated to a battle fought on this site in 1692. Four hundred French and Indian troops attacked 29 Wells defenders in a small fort. There were also 14 reinforcements onboard three boats in the harbor. The attackers split their efforts between the two targets. The French General La Brognerie built a wooden plank shield on a wagon and tried to push the wagon out to the boats at low tide. When the wagon became stuck in the mud the General tried to lift the wheel and was shot in the head. Undeterred the attackers build a raft and set it ablaze expecting the ebbing tide to drift it into the boats. The winds picked up and blew the fiery raft away. After running out of ammunition the attackers retreated. Here is the rest of the story.

This covered bridge is at the entrance to the monument. I said we would find a covered bridge.

We met our long time friends Jay and Pat Ferriter for dinner at The Library restaurant in Portsmouth, NH. This restaurant was built in 1795. During its reconstruction in 1889 the dining room ceiling was constructed by the Pullman Car woodworkers. Just a few of the noteworthy people that have dined or stayed in this hotel are George Washington, James K. Polk, Theodore Roosevelt, Chester Arthur, William Taft and John F. Kennedy, Jay Ferriter, Pat Ferriter, Priscilla Simons and John Simons. This is a classic dark wood steak restaurant. The food is amazing.

The Library.

A delightful dinner with Jay and Pat Ferriter.

This is what an amazing meal at the Library looks like.

We have one more day in Wells before we go to Framingham to visit Alison, Oscar and Jackson.
