Day 9 - Paradise Found

We are on the hook in paradise or should I say Beardrop Cove. The 28 mile trip from Meldrum Bay was on flat as glass seas. The winds continue to be light and are forecasted light for the next several days.

Beardrop Cove is well protected from winds from all directions. The scenery is reminiscent of the coast of Maine and east Door County, Wisconsin with huge granite boulder islands with thick growths of pine trees. The water is warmer than expected at 76*f. We are anchored with a dozen sailboats and one other power boat. Legend tells of bears being driven from the bluffs in days gone by, hence the name. We are on land belonging to the Serpent River First Nation Indian reservation.

There is an abundance of wildlife here. We have seen eagles, loons and a family of otters. I caught a small mouth bass while spin casting last night. A good fight on light tackle. Priscilla drove the dingy and put me right on the fish. The sun had set and it was one of my last casts of the night. Never, never give up. I do not know the exact weight of the bass. It was at least 3 pounds. My fishing captain friend Jeff advised never carry a fish weighing scale. That way no one can dispute your estimate. Good advice. That fish might’ve been closer to four pounds. I did catch and release.

We grilled brats for dinner last night and heated up the leftover BC pizza on the grill. Gourmet dining on the hook.

We ran the generator for an hour to charge up our house battery. All systems continue to work well. The generator has very good sound insulation so it is not much more than a humming sound. We do not want to disturb the neighbors.

Today we will inflate our two person inflatable kayak and explore the small islands. We know from experience there are blueberries on those islands. Blueberry pancakes for breakfast tomorrow.

The start of the Mac sailboat race is today. The winds in Chicago are almost non existent. Could be another drifter fly swatting Mac. Having raced 10 Macs on Blue Heaven I am not missing it right now.

We will spend another night in Beardrop Cove and cruise to the Benjamin Islands tomorrow. The Benjamin’s are formed from rose colored quartz and are quite beautiful. After the Benjamin’s we will spend a day in civilization in Little Current and then continue east to Killarney.

This is the view just behind our boat in Beardrop Cove.
