Pizza pan phone antenna - get more bars
Pizza Pans >>>
Never before has such an innocent comment created so many questions! In last week’s newsletter we mentioned that the Wilson Sleek 4G cellular amp will work much better if it is used with a pizza pan. We had given specifics in a previous newsletter but the use of a pizza pan sparked the curiosity of many after last week’s mention. With nearly 250 requests for more information, we thought we should briefly address the pizza pan since many others might also think that we’ve lost our minds. The Wilson amp comes with a small whip type of antenna that has a magnetic mount as a base. It’s designed to attach magnetically to a car roof. The attachment provides more than just a physical connection. It creates a ground-plane for the antenna. The ground-plane helps to reflect radio waves from the antenna element and it turns out that a 12 inch pizza pan provides a great ground-plane for use on a boat for cellular frequencies. You’ll gain an extra bar or two from the amp because of the pan. The pizza pan must be steel and should magnetically stick to the whip antenna. It’s a strong magnet so we mounted the pizza pan in the ceiling of our pilothouse and then just placed the magnetic whip antenna in the center. And no, there shouldn’t be any pizza in the pan when you do this!
