Day 272 - Northern Water Snake
Miles cruised 0, fuel purchased $0, slip fee $145, daily high temperature 90°f
We took a tour of Baltimore on the red bus. There is a lot of history in this town. The world headquarters for Domino Sugar and Under Armour are here. Babe Ruth and Nancy Pelosi were born here.
The Babe was born in Baltimore.
The tour of Fort McHenry was fascinating. There is a 15 minute video regarding the battle with the British fleet in 1814 and details of Francis Scott Key writing the Star Spangled Banner. As the National Anthem is playing the screen rolls up to reveal the flag pole and replica flag flying over Fort McHenry. A very patriotic moment.
Fort McHenry is a national park.
During the 24 hour siege of Fort McHenry only 4 American’s were killed and 25 were wounded. The guns in Fort McHenry had a range of 1.5 miles so the British fleet stayed out of range. The British fleet had cannons that could fire 2 miles but the accuracy diminished at that distance. The British realized they could not take the fort and sailed away much to the delight of the citizen’s of Baltimore.
Andy was selected to help with the flag ceremony to lower the flag flown at night and replace it with the day time flag.
We saw this snake swim past the seawall at our marina. The internet advises the Northern water snake is non-venomous.
Bonus photo – a better photo of Constellation.
On Tuesday we will cruise 50 miles up the Chesapeake to the Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbor. We will meet the harbor AGLCA harbor hosts Foster and Susan from Quo Vadimus for sundowners and dinner. On Wednesday we will cruise across the C and D canal and the crusade SE to Cape May, New Jersey.
.Carl (Chef) Wooden – quote of the day.
“Sailing – The fine art of slowly going nowhere at great expense while being cold, wet and miserable.”
