Day 224 - Leaving on a Jet Plane
Miles cruised 1/2, fuel purchased $0, slip fee $24, daily high temperature 59°f and raining.
The coldest winter I ever spent was in Norfolk, VA. in May.
It rained all night and until early afternoon. We pumped out at the dock and cast off our lines for the 1/2 mile crossing of the Elizabeth River to the Tidewater Marina in Portsmouth, VA. We will leave CL here for the better part of a month. John and Priscilla will fly to Boston for a week to visit grandson Jackson and then fly to Chicago for a week to visit granddaughter Eleanor and then fly to Stuart, FL to close on the condo. We will return to Portsmouth, VA on May 28. After a few days in Portsmouth we will start heading north up the Chesapeake Bay. Dale and Andy will go to Chicago for two weeks. This will be the first time CL is empty during this trip. The monthly rate at the marina is a good value. We are paying $24 per day which is $12 each. That is 50 cents per hour per person for our slip for the month.
We are on D dock which is on the upper right hand side.
Before he departs, Dale will use this opportunity to have the engine oil and filters and the dingy engine oil changed as well as check the all the zincs.
The blog will not be published every day until the Great Loop adventure restarts at the end of May. Do not be concerned if there several extended hiatuses.
We are the blue dot on the right hand side. That blue dot will not move for at least three weeks. Then we will cruise up the Chesapeake to the C and D canal to Cape May, New Jersey. Then up the Jesrey shore to Manhattan and the Hudson River. We should be near Albany, NY around around July 4.
Update on Boaty McBoatface – The United Kingdom polar research vessel that captivated the internet with a naming contest gone awry has a name now. Naming of the ship was put to an internet contest several months ago, and the winning name was Boaty McBoatface. The committee was likely thrilled that it had reserved the right not to use the number-one name.
The ship’s official name will be the RRS Sir David Attenborough, in honor of the BBC nature broadcaster who turns 90 this year.
But worry not, Boaty McBoatface fans: the name will live on as an exploratory vessel housed onboard the ship:
Bonnis photo. This boat owner tried to pay homage to Jimmy but it was a big fail. He spelled Buffett wrong.
Carl (Chef) Wooden – quote of the day.
“I grew up on the East Coast and was going to go to an Ivy League School, but at the last minute I decided to be a hippy. It was the protest movements on the war, peace movements were going on at our university. It was a fantastic time.”
